COMPREHENSIVE FITNESS PROGRAMS DESIGNED FOR FIREFIGHTERS BY FIREFIGHTERS

Here at TACFIT Firefighter, we are well positioned to implement, facilitate and support a health-related fitness program as outlined in NFPA 1583 using the TACFIT System.

The NFPA 1583: Standard on Health-Related Fitness Programs for Firefighters was developed to provide the minimum requirements for fire department members who are involved in rescue, fire suppression, emergency medical services, hazardous materials operations, special operations, and related activities.

The health-related fitness program as outlined in NFPA 1583 includes the following components:

  1. The assignment of a qualified health and fitness coordinator
  2. A periodic fitness assessment for all members
  3. An exercise training program that is available to all members
  4. Education and counseling regarding health promotion for all members
  5. A process for collecting and maintaining health-related fitness program data

Our mission at TACFIT Firefighter is to improve occupational performance and response readiness for firefighters while reducing the risk of injury, sudden cardiac death, suicide, and potential long-term debilitative diseases, including cancer.

We believe that the risk of injury and disease-related death may be reduced through varied intensity firefighter physical training, healthy nutrition, proactive stress management and mindful lifestyle choices, all of which is addressed in our TACFIT Firefighter Program Goals and Objectives:

TACFIT Firefighter Health-Related Fitness Program Goals

  1. Reduce the risk of Sudden Cardiac Death, Suicide, and Cancer
  2. Eliminate injuries caused by physical training
  3. Reduce the risk of occupational and recreational injuries
  4. Improve firefighter performance
  5. Develop the “Athlete Mindset” in firefighters
  6. Build a foundation for teamwork and support

TACFIT Firefighter Health-Related Fitness Program Objectives

  1. Implement TACFIT Firefighter Health-Related Fitness Program (HRFP)
  2. Identify Exercise Specialists as defined by the IAFF/IAFC Wellness-Fitness Initiative
  3. Identify and support the Health and Fitness Coordinator (HFC) as defined by NFPA 1583
  4. Identify and support Peer Fitness Trainers (PFTs) as defined by the IAFF/IAFC Wellness-Fitness Initiative
  5. Implement a periodic fitness assessment for all members as defined by NFPA 1583
  6. Complete an Exercise Equipment Needs Assessment for each Fire Station TACFIT Gym
  7. Provide specific and comprehensive exercise training programs that are available to all members as defined by NFPA 1583
  8. Provide education and counseling regarding health promotion for all members as defined by NFPA 1583
  9. Develop a process for collecting and maintaining health-related fitness program data while protecting the privacy of individual members as defined by NFPA 1583
  10. Consider growth of the Fire Department Wellness Program as funding and staffing allows
